3 Stars Not up to usual Toshiba standards
I bought a 37″ Regza a few months ago and like it but this smaller Toshiba is way inferior…the vertical viewing angle is limited to about 10 degrees…which makes for very poor pic quality if the watcher isn’t pretty much smack in front of the screen.
Not impressed.
I’m editing this…with a couple of books, I was able to tilt the screen to get a better viewing angle which made a BIG difference. The television has a wonderful picture if you’re looking at it directly…that’s my only point here. But then people don’t usually look at a Rembrandt from way off to the side, do they?
5 Stars Nice performance, great value
I just got this TV when Amazon dropped the price. I am very pleased with it, its a terrific value. The picture is amazing, its highly energy efficient costing only $1.14 a month to operate based on 6 hours viewing a day. Its an Energy Star TV. Sound is also good for what it is it has 2 X 5 watt speakers. I saw the other review here and am a little perplexed as I’ve found this TV to be a great value for a standard 26″ LCD TV which is what it is. I’d highly recommend it.
4 Stars Good performance, Excellent value
I was surprised to see how great the picture looks, coupled with the extensive inputs/outputs, while the price was over 30% lower than other comparable models. The only negative is that the screen cannot be tilted and the vertical viewing angle is not very good.

Sony Bravia XBR Series KDL 37XBR6 37 Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

The Sony KDL-37XBR6 37″ BRAVIA XBR(R) LCD HDTV features Full HD 1080p, BRAVIA Engine 2 digital video processing, Advanced Contrast Enhancer circuit (ACE), 24p True Cinema capable, enhanced XMB user interface, and BRAVIA Sync with a piano black gloss black finish. Unlike lower resolution products that need to down convert high definition content to a lower level to display properly, the KDL-37XBR6 with its native 1920×1080 display, has the flexibility to display the highest definition content at the highest 1080p HDTV resolution. Dynamic Noise Reduction intelligently identifies and dramatically reduces noise in the signal according to the motion and brightness of each scene for clearer, crisper images. Sony’s Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) uses real-time image processing to dynamically adjust backlight levels for improved contrast without masking details the filmmaker intended you to see. ACE delivers deep blacks in darker scenes, as well as fine details in shadows and other dark areas of the picture for a difference you can truly see. 5 Stars Fanstatic picture and sound
I’ve owned this tv for two months. HD channels have exceptional color and depth (to be expected), and standard channels come in clear as well. The sound on the tv is good.
TV has ports for just about any type of connection. Currently using it with HDMI to cable DVR box, RCA jacks for XBox connection, and RCA jacks to connect a VCR. Although the latter two aren’t HD devices the sound and color are good. Playing games on the XBox makes me feel like I am in the game as compared to the old Sony tube TV.
The delivery through Amazon was stellar. The shipment arrived 5 days ahead of the projected time listed on the site.
5 Stars great picture, but TV Guide is not good
The picture works great in a glarry room, the remote the whole family can use, etc. everything about this TV is great, except the TV Guide thingy. I have another digital receiver that displays generic non branded guide information. This branded ‘TV guide’ doesn’t work in my neigborhood. This is via antenna, not cable. It is sad to pay this much for a TV and the guide not work as well as our cheap digital converter box does. As my wife said, the information must be available, the Sony machine just doesn’t utilize it.
Sony, for those of us who live w/o cable or dish, could we just have a simple unbranded version of the guide? Its only software, how about an update?
5 Stars shipping
TV is great. Came in 3 days to cape cod from Amazon in PA. Box was in bad condition. There was a hole in it and the styrofoam blocks were crushed. Fortunately the TV is ok.
5 Stars Good performance and no adjustments necessary!
I have had this Sony for almost three months and am still happy with it. So far have not adjusted anything. The only problem I have had so far was that I lost the sound and had to reset my cable box and turn the Sony back on.
Pros: Picture on HD and Blu-rays is always good. Picture on DVDs up converted by blu ray player is also good. HDMI connections are very convenient (buy the Belkin HDMI Gold connectors from Amazon and save yourself a big box rip-off!). Most SD pictures are fine on the Sony Bravia XBR6.
Cons: Sound is a little thin. Menu response is slow. This unit is not thin by any stretch of the imagination.
Summary: all around performance that is easy to live with. A sure thing.
1 Star Great TV, misleading power specification
I’d agree with the five star ratings of most others if it weren’t for one thing. This TV is supposed to be Energy Star compliant (low standby power consumption) and Sony says the TV draws less than 0.1 watts in sleep mode. I have a power meter and test all new appliances and guess what? This TV draws an average of 15-20 watts when plugged in and supposedly off. (My meter isn’t that accurate at these low readings, but I’m confident it’s in that range.) Sometimes the meter goes to 0 watts, but that’s only for a short period of time after which it consumes about 20 watts. I suspect the problem is with the TV guide the unit gets from PBS stations, which would seem to require the tuner to be on, and 20 watts for that might be reasonable.
At roughly 25c/kWh that I pay for my last tier of power, that’s about $40 a year of wasted power and corresponding CO2. I tried calling Sony about this to find out if I had a defective TV, or as is more likely, the unit rarely goes to sleep due to the guide search or similar. Initially, they were helpful and said they’d look into it, but I’ve heard nothing in a month in spite of two emails (plus one just now). I also just wasted half an hour on the phone, mostly on hold. I give up on Sony helping with this, but wanted others to know of this situation.
On the positive side, I found buying through Amazon really enjoyable. I called the specialist number they list on the TV’s page to find out if there was a coax cable input, and they knew there was one even though the spec doesn’t mention it. The TV came within a few days of my placing the order.

5 Stars Sony46z41000
TV,price and delivery were all excellent. I was somewhat worried about buying a tv on line because of the shipping but the” white glove” delivery was very professional and included in the price of the tv.
5 Stars Really Like the KDL46Z4100
I’m not a tech geek but did a lot of research, looked at quite a few TV’s in stores and read many reviews. I was mostly comparing Sony & Samsung but also took a look at Toshiba. In fact, I had pretty much decided on Samsung and then had a change of mind. These brands all have some good quality sets.
I chose this Sony because the previous (non-HD) Sony TV we had was still working great after 10 years with no problem and I felt more comfortable with their reliability ratings in Consumer Reports. Another reason, like others here on Amazon is the less reflective screen. I had decided to go with a “W” series Sony with the 120hz motion enhancer but decided to upgrade to the “Z” series when a really hot price came out. When I purchased it, the Z was only $100 more than the W series TV and was $1000 below the list price, which turned out to be $500 less than the popular local big box department store. Plus free shipping, no sales tax and white glove delivery. The Z series has a couple of upgrades to enhance the picture and network other tech devices in your house (which I don’t need right now, but you never know down the road).
As far as delivery, no major problems. It took less than a week for delivery. I was pulling up to our driveway and the delivery truck had pulled up a few minutes before me. There was just one guy and I saw him drop the TV slightly as he was trying to lower it onto his cart, so I would recommend making sure you are there to help get it out of the truck and carry it in. Not a real heavy TV but a little bulky for one person. But the TV was packed very well and had no damage.
The driver helped put it on the TV stand and I hooked up cables to make sure we had a good picture and there weren’t any initial problems while the driver waited for me to do so.
When I thought I was having a problem at first with HD channels, I called Amazon to ask some questions on what to do (Sony wasn’t much help but given my problem I can understand why, it wasn’t an issue with the TV). Amazon was ready to replace the TV instantly if needed. I decided to troubleshoot some more and figured out my DirecTV receiver needed to be reprogrammed. But my point with this is Amazon was great on the phone and they were ready to back-up the product they sold.
We are really happy with this choice. I like sports but watching golf on TV has never been a favorite for me. But while flipping channels I found myself mesmerized when I stopped to watch it in HD on this Sony.
Keep in mind, you will notice a big quality difference with HD channels even on a good set such as this.
5 Stars Awesome! Five stars, for sure.
I had been researching TV’s for about a month or so. I knew I wanted an LCD in the 42″-50″ range, backed by a trusted brand name, with if not cutting edge technology then at least most of the latest and greatest features on current high-end models. This because a TV is something I buy and use for many years, and I don’t want my set to become obsolete two years from purchase date. So after reading many product specifications, manufacturers’ descriptions, reviews from other users and professional reviewers, and spending many hours walking through electronics stores and looking at displays, I picked the Sony Bravia KDL-46Z4100. The next closest contender was the KDL-46W4100. However, the Z series won out, although it was a couple of hundred dollars more expensive, for these reasons:
- Much better looking set (I’m talking about the physical TV here) with a very slim bezel and all-black design, as opposed to the two-tone black and silver of the W.
- 10 bit color processor, which gives far more on-screen colors. I didn’t think this was a big deal, until I saw a W and Z series side by side in a store, and the display happened to show a sunset. The W had distinct bands of color, while the Z had a gradual change of color.
- DLNA. I don’t use this option yet, but it’s nice to know that I can if I want to. I have a PS3, which also has DLNA, and I use that to beam images/music/video from my computer to my TV. The reason I use the PS3 is because its DLNA capability is wireless, while the TV’s is not. This is an important caveat for those to whom the TV’s DLNA capability is important. There are ways to make it work wirelessly, like hooking up a bridge, but I have not tried that. However, just know that out of the box, the TV can’t do wireless DLNA.
I also compared this TV with the XBR series, and found that it has almost all the features XBR has but for many hundreds of dollars less. I just didn’t see any huge benefit in going for the XBR versus this model.
As for comparison with other brands: I did consider Samsung, LG, Sharp, and others, but only Samsung seemed to have products that could take on Sony’s Bravias in terms of picture quality and features. However, in my humble opinion, Samsung shot themselves in the foot by putting glossy screens on their LCD’s, thus defeating one of the primary purposes people are moving from plasma to LCD. This is something I read about and didn’t think was a huge difference until I did a side-by-side comparison in the store. The Samsung ToC models reflected the image from the TV displays across the room. The Bravias did not. I have a living room with many windows, so this instantly killed the Samsung’s chances.
As for this TV: I can’t say enough good things about it. If you are a techno geek, there are enough settings and features to keep you busy playing with them and setting them for days. If you are not, and just want to take it out of the box and use it, then it works too because setup couldn’t be simpler. Just set it where you want it, hook up the power, connect your DVD/STB/receiver/box etc, and it’s good to go. You can tweak settings to your heart’s content, but don’t have to. I was amazed by the picture right out of the box. The first movie we watched was Wall-E on Blu Ray, and the picture just blew my mind. We also watched a few episodes of Lost, and there were various scenes where the picture almost looked 3-dimensional, like looking out a window. Just amazing colors. We actually paused the show a few times to admire the picture.
Oh, and the surround sound speakers are pretty good too. I hooked up my USB flash drive directly into the TV, and played a few songs from there via the TV’s speakers, and it sounded very crisp. I’m not an audiophile, but to my ears it sounded more than satisfactory.
Is the 120Hz a big deal? Here’s something anecdotal (and the sample size is only one), but for what it’s worth: I was standing in the store and looking at the display on this TV for a few minutes. Then I turned around and looked at another TV that was showing the same display but had a refresh rate of 60Hz. I instantly started getting a headache. This is not a definitive scientific test, but I thought I’d mention it.
Nice little touch: the TV stand has a screw-hole in the back to fix it to the unit it is sitting on, to prevent the TV from toppling over if pulled too hard. You don’t have to use this, because the stand is sufficiently wide and deep to take the weight, but just good to have. I don’t know if all such TV’s come with stands that have this. I appreciated this because I have a 2-year old child at home. It will take two people to lift the TV and set it up, either on its stand or wall mount. The TV is light enough that I can lift it on my own, but I’d rather be cautious with an expensive electronic device. I’m also happy that the box fit on the back seat of my Maxima, otherwise I would have to hire a truck to bring it home.
Complaints: The remote is too large, and is a basic universal remote. It works just fine for this TV, and will also probably work fine with most other standard devices, but lacks the very important learning feature. I actually like the layout of buttons and the ergonomic design, just not the size and the lacking feature set. Also, the slim bezel around the TV is high-gloss, so it reflects light from other sources. Nitpicking here, but I wish it were matt.
5 Stars A GREAT TV AND A GREAT DEAL
