5 Stars Awesome Telly!!!
This telly is so great. Football looks awesome, games are great, standard definition looks pretty good too. It looks stylish and is just beautiful. Not much else to say about the telly that others haven’t said. I spent a ton of time researching and definitely am happy with this buy. Go get it now.
4 Stars Samsung PN50A550
I have done much research before I picked this set up as probably most of the reiviewers have. And I was pretty much between picking this set up or the Panasonic PZ80 model. After much research I concluded that many opinions viewed that the Samsung has more color accuracy and more tune-able options vs the Panasonic. So I went with this one. The advice I have with people researching televisions is that do not rely too much on peoples reviews and opinions and go check out the television yourself…preferably with your bluray/ whatever source you are going to watching most. Many people are nitpicky about things that most people can’t even see(especially people over at AVS forums). But I digress. The TV is awesome..comes included with a swivel stand which some people might not need.
The only nitpick thing I have with the TV is that reflection is so evident in this model. So if you have this placed in front of a window or have lights in front of the tv you will see your reflection. I knew this going in but did not know it would be this bad…since I came from a LCD background. Also don’t get into the hoopla of 1080P…if it fits your need then buy it…if not just get a 720P set and save some bucks for xmas. All in all it is what I expected.
But a recommendation, Amazon is no longer doing pricematch of themselves and they dropped $100 dollars within 30 days since I bought it. They will not refund my money which they changed their policy in September..how convient on their part. I will not make big purchases on Amazon anymore because of this. Just a forewarning to those planning to purchase at Amazon.
5 Stars Excellent picture and great price
Recently purchased the Samsung PN50A550 and not only did I save several hundred off of the store price, but have been really happy with the picture quality. The color and sharpness on this TV are excellent and the setup menus and options are very well thought out. If you are serious about picture quality, this is the TV for you.
5 Stars PERFECT
This television is awesome. Period. The color accuracy is astounding, the setup is quick and easy, and it just looks nice as a piece of furniture.
My ONLY gripe would be that the speakers aren’t loud enough sometimes, and if you turn the volume up high enough, the sound (especially lower tones) can make the cabinet buzz or vibrate a little. But I have exterior speakers, so this was not an issue for me. The sound quality from the built-in speakers is excellent.
I would highly recommend this tv. However, if you have a non-HD source going into it, you WILL know it. If you have HD already, or plan to get it, get ready for one hell of a ride. If you have a Disney/Pixar movie DVD (like The Incerdibles, Cars, etc…) that has a THX Optimizer for your picture settings, USE IT! I did, and the picture quality still makes my jaw drop.
Great tv, great picture, great sound, great looks. Buy it- you will not be disappointed.
2 Stars Defective Plasma
Ordered a brand new PN50A550 Oct 2oth, 2009. It took one week for shipping. Upon arrival I inspected it and looked fine. After taking a hour to set up, I enjoyed the picture for few minutes before noticing a bright line 2 pixels wide going across the middle of the screen. It was much more noticable with lighter backgrounds. To my great disappointment, I called the vendor and they would not ship another plasma if you accepted the shipping. They kindly refered me to Samsung tech support. After waiting 10 minutes Samsung refered me to a local technician. They came over the next day and diagnosed the problem. Apparently its a “rare” defect. BTW - this tv was manufactured in Mexico, there has been alot of chatter with defective sets manufactured there, guess I was one of the unlucky ones…Another week has past, and we are still waiting for the parts from Samsung. So almost a month later, I am still waiting to enjoy my “new” plasma. This model had alot of potential, but this whole experience has been very frustrating. If I could do it over again, I would by the comparable Panasonic plasma.

3 Stars Great TV but hardcore video gamers BEWARE of ghosting
My girlfriend got this TV and after a hassle getting it home (you HAVE to keep it upright) we finally got it set up. The picture is really nice, even with 720p or 1080i it looks great, and the swivel stand is a nice feature. I played video games on it as well, but after a week and a half of use there was HORRIBLE burn in on the screen from the Ps3. We tried the white screen and shifting pixels with no joy. I looked in the instruction booklet and it said that you should have static images (tickers, video game displays, etc) on the TV less than 10% of the viewing time. What?! If I use the TV for 20 hours a week, I should only use it for games with static displays (health bars, spedometers, etc) for 2 hours a week?! Stick with LCD if you don’t want to worry about ghosting.
4 Stars AMENDED: If you think you need 1080P in a 50 inch think again !
Coming from the graphics industry I’ve always known the spec wars are total ego feeders. At 50 inches 720P is fantastic. 65 inches in the same room and you would be able to see the difference of a 1080P. But not at this size.
If you want amazing HD that is so sharp it will make your eyes bleed… this is your set !
If you want a TV that displays the free HD Cable channels your cable provider provides WITHOUT a cable box… this is the set.
If you want a set not too big to still watch your SD DVD collection… this is the set.
If you buy products based on proper spec for the format rather than EGO… this is your set.
If you don’t already own a surround system and want a reasonable cost system… Buy at least a nice self powered computer speaker system though cause the speakers on this set stink. I recommend the Logitech THX rated 5500 series DOLBY/DTS surround with optical input. In a small living room this will rock the couch at $200.
Amazon’s delivery was 2 days early… called for an appointment… showed up on time.
UPDATE (10/31/2008): I almost want to remove a star. I want to keep my system simple. Have a PC Media Center and a DVD player connected via HDMI. TV has an Optical Out so a single connection for my sound from TV to Surround system seems to be indicated for TV, DVD or PC watching.
WRONG… This TV will pass my Cable TV 5.1 digital sound to the Surround system. But it limits DVD & PC to 2 channel stereo only. I am now forced to have independent sound connections to audio system. Every time you change a source you need to do it twice. This just should not be the case. The HDMI should carry sound to the TV and TV should pass it through the optical interface that I paid for.
WORK AROUNDS… Buy a HDMI switcher that I should not need to buy. Or buy a programmable remote and spend two days setting it up to run all my devices and teach it to change video source on TV and Audio source on Audio system simultaneously.
BOTTOMLINE… The TV should allow digital sound to pass through the HDMI to the Optical Output on the TV. Why they thought passing through 5.1 for a cable TV channel matters more than passing through digital audio for our HD & DVD sources is beyond my understanding. I’m disappointed.
5 Stars Can never watch sports in SD again!
Only had the TV for a week, and I use the settings that CNET recommends for a dark room, and all I can say is WOW! I wasn’t planning on purchasing an HDTV until next year, but with the baseball playoffs and total price of this set ($999); I just couldn’t wait any longer. I spent hours in stores looking at TVs and reading online sites (consumer reports) and this was by far the best TV for the money. I cannot tell the dif between 720 and 1080, though it doesnt matter anyway because I do not have an HD DVD. I have had no issues with burn-in or reflections, even when all of the lights on or sun shining into my living room. My old CRT TV had more reflection issues than this TV does. This TV is just amazing, and I now find it impossible to watch sports in anything, but HD!
1 Star Really Upset over this TV
We had this Samsung 92 days…….and now burn in? Already? The manual states no fixed images more than 5% of the time? well, every station out there has their logo fixed to the screen.
I am really disappointed and mad, feel the tv was just a waste of money.
Have burn in on the bottom and on the left side.
Nice picture though but not worth it if it gets burn in only after 90 days. I also own a 32″ Samsung HD LCD that I have in the bedroom, really makes me wonder if it will do the same. The manual for that says the same thing about burn in/image retention……waaaaaa!
5 Stars Great
It’s simply a great TV, I compared it to my friends 52 1080 LCD Touch Of Red Samsung, and not even for a moment did I regret this purchase.
Phenomenal value/price ratio!
Just be aware of burn in limitations of Plasma TV (zoom in picture when watching 4:3) and have your brightness/contrast settings on 50% or less, an you will be very happy! I had it for over 3 months now and no problems at all.

5 Stars Good TV for the price
Pros: Good picture, lots of inputs. Works well with my PC (DVI to HDMI cable). Cons: Gets a little hot. Menu kinda sucks. When you turn on the TV it doesn’t go to the active input. You have to scroll with the remote everytime. Sound is ok, but i never expect too much from TV speakers. For the price this is a better choice than a Panasonic, imo. I’ve had it for 3 months now. Amazon white glove delivery was great.
5 Stars Amazing tv
Ive had this tv for a couple of weeks now and I am extremly satisfied. The color is amazing, and the blacks are deep and rich. And for the price you wont find anything comparable. I did a lot of research before this purchase and everything I read pointed me towards this tv. CNET.com is a great site to do your research on. If your concerned about the red tint on the border of the tv, dont be. It doesnt light up or anything (I thought it did) and it is hardly noticeable. Dont let that sway you one way or another.
The price on amazon is, as usual one of the cheapest around. There was one other site that was less expensive but I never dealt with that web site before and shipping was extra. When I purchased this tv from amazon it was only about [...]bucks more and the shipping was included. Also the shipping was white glove into my living room and actually arrived a day earlier then they promised! They did call me ahead of time to make sure it was okay they delivered early and of course I said yes.
5 Star product, with 5 star delivery.
If you want more information on the performance of the tv I’d advise you to check out cnet.com and do a search for the pn50a650. They also have a comparison between the Samsung and the Panasonic. Samsung wins by a mile.
Good luck and enjoy.
5 Stars Simply WOW!!
I purchased a Samsung 650 Plasma and was amazed.. Understand, I didn’t trust the internet purchase and was not sure if this was really the product I wanted. (LCD vs Plasma) No doubt the right decision. Process was safe with Amazon and the delivery Company was great.. The delivery company called to confirm the delivery, respectfully conversed with us, and pulled the TV out of the box, placed it on the table and showed me it was working as planned. Asked if I wanted the box or they would hold it for me. More about the the 650. Did I say WOW… I just wanted a tv I would be happy with and not regret my decision. LCD vs Plasma.. Tough decision. My co worker does this for a living and talked me out of a LCD ..Great move..Distance from the TV is 8- 18 feet. Love watching Football and Hockey. Great angle viewing and glare is not there. (I get alot of sunlight in the room) Sound is of good quality.
Bottom line, we all want a quality product and a good price. With the money I saved, I bought cables, wall mount and a power washer and still saved money compared to Best buy.. You will be happy with this decision!!!!
4 Stars Samsung 50 inch Plasma with Touch of Red
The TV is beautiful. I got it just in time for football season. The delivery people blew off our appointment and I didn’t get the Plasma until a week later.
5 Stars Beautifull TV
I have now had a month to view this TV and I must say I have no complaints. First, the delivery was flawless. The shipping company was on time, unpacked the TV, placed it on my stand and even took away the packaging. The viewing experience has to be experienced to be believed. I have an extensive DVD collection and also a smaller Blu Ray collection so I tried a good sample of both to get a feel for the quality of the display.
The Blu Ray disks are absolutely gorgeous. The Blue Planet disk showed the blue color as well as my old Sony. I always thought that Sony did the best job with color accuracy especially the blues but I must say this set matched Sony if not exceeded it.
I am very pleased with this plasma especially considering the reasonable price.

5 Stars A Great Purchase
I made the decision to buy a Samsung LN46A850 after several weeks of research, but finding a suitable vendor was the next big challenge. Although some local stores offered price breaks, Amazon seemed to offer a significantly better price, along with free shipping. Once I placed my order, the delivery process was straightforward, easy to track, and on-time. The delivery person even brought the box up a flight of stairs. The television arrived in good condition and was easy to set up.
I am very happy with this purchase and the overall shopping experience with Amazon - thanks!
5 Stars Samsung, has produced a great product
I have purchased this television 8 weeks ago, a month ago I finally finished hooking up all the cables. 3 weeks ago I upgraded to HD with Dish network. The results are quite impressive, the clarity is really there. There is such a difference between the two most watched televisions in our home as one is not HD. Eventually I’ll be getting another quality set like the Samsung LN46A850.
One of the main reasons I chose this TV was the thickness at 1.9 inches it helps the bulk on the wall seem less than if I had a TV stick out 4 to 6 inches more than this one.
With a Blu-ray,a dish receiver, and a Bose system I’m going to have to get a remote that can operate all 3…I can see that with electronics there’s no end. I am happy with this TV, hopefully it’ll last for years to come.
The delivery was also handled well, although I was not able to view the TV when it first arrived, everything turned out great, especially since I saved nearly $700 buying it at Amazon instead of a name brand store.
I recently had a group over to watch a football game together and everyone was impressed with the SamsungLN46A850, at it’s size, the HD, the TV thickness. My team lost but the TV was a winner.
5 Stars LN46A850 review, long
First off let me provide some basic info so you have an understanding of the use, location, and expectations for this TV. Let me state that this is the first HDTV we have ever owned. This is a replacement for a functioning 25″ Zenith color console with a rotary dial (only has a flat UHF and VHF input) that we purchased new 25 plus years ago. We have basic cable (Time Warner) that was hooked up to the old TV through a VHS and DVD (separate) player. We started researching HDTV’s last year. After information overload from all of the various manufactures as to why they were better we settled on the Samsung brand just to start narrowing it down. After that we took up the Plasma vs. LCD. We settled on the LCD and then quickly narrowed it down to the 46″ model based upon our living room layout. We have three interior and one exterior wall, with the exterior wall facing east and is all glass. We have a fireplace at the end of the room and that is where the TV has always set. After all of that was done we were ready to pull the trigger and purchase the LN46A650 but waited for a while ($$). By the time we were ready to purchase, Samsung had just released the 850, 860, and 950. Jump back into research to see what the differences were. Well thin is what we needed to help with the room arrangement so we quickly changed to the 850 (ToC red) / 860 (ToC blue) model. We purchased the 850 on Cyber Monday. It arrived the following Monday.
1. CEVA Logistics, Just after placing my order I received a confirmation from Amazon with the tracking #. Goggled CEVA, placed the tracking # in the main web page to locate the TV and there it was, at the warehouse outside of Harrisburg Pa. I checked it several times that week and followed it through their system. I received a phone call from the local agent on Friday who setup a delivery time on Monday (7 days after the order) for a delivery between 9 and 1. They arrived at about 10:00 with a small urban type delivery truck. The two deliverymen were college aged and friendly. They met me at the door and we inspected the package together. They advised me before stepping into the house that they were only to unpack and check that it powered on. They did just that and there were no issues. I tried to tip them but they politely refused and went on their way. I am mentioning this here as some reviews were all over the place on them.
2. The TV, It was easy to hook up. Screwed in the cable to the back and turned it on. It went through a couple of quick menus and then it was searching for channels. It even tells you on the screen where it is in the process. We only get about 60 basic cable channels so I was quite surprised when it said that it was up to about 150 and still going. Once it reached the end it stated “removing scrambled channels” which brought the number back down. It found all of the HD channels that Time Warner provides free and I never new they were there.
3. Navigating the built in menu system is fairly easy. Once you get the hang of the remote you can set up the entire TV in about 30 minutes (in my case).
4. I will say that the remotes are pretty particular that they are pointed at the lower left side of the screen. One remote has everything on it. The second remote in the box that is pretty basic. It will turn the TV off and on; change the channels and the volume.
5. ToC, this is a non issue in this model. You can barely see it at all and there is no glare that we can detect at all through the sides that affect the picture.
6. The black bezel is extremely glossy and looks spectacular. When our room has all of the lights on you can see the reflections off of it but it has not interfered with our viewing. We mostly have one light on in the room at the far end in the evening and it is not noticeable. Daytime viewing, in the morning the room is brightly lit as it gets the rising sun. The screen is not affected from it.
7. Factory defaults, from the start we left them alone till we had a better feel for the TV. We have been tweaking here and there and believe that everyone can customize to their tastes. The picture is just exceptionally clear and the TV does a great job of adjusting the straight 4:3 broadcast into what ever format you want. I think that there are 5 different settings here (4:3, 16:9, zoom 1, zoom 2, wide fit) and you can set to your tastes.
8. DVD Player, Hooked it up to the TV with component cables as the connection. The player is a 2001 model and is pretty basic. We placed a Star Wars DVD in because of the THX calibration (Google it) and was utterly amazed that it looked that good. We did not do a calibration and left all of the settings alone. The TV has a built in surround sound emulator that can be turned on and off if you do not have external speakers. The sound was absolutely great compared to what we had before. I am sure that it does not match a true 5:1 or 7:1 but in no way is it weak as other reviewers have claimed.
9. Interface to home server through DLNA. I have not had a chance to install the software on the home PC yet.
10. Infolink, The INFOLINK found everything the first time. News, Sports, Weather, and Stocks etc can be programmed fairly easy.
Final comments, the channel search found double channels on all of the major broadcast affiliates (NBC, ABC, FOX, ETC). It is easy to go through the menu system and tell which is analog and which is digital. Delete the analog as you can see a major difference in the quality. One can hit an “info” button on the remote and it will give you all of the technical stuff on the channels. I really like the feature that tells you which format the broadcasts are in, 4:3 or 16:9, and the resolution 420i, 720P, 1080i. The HD channels and shows themselves are clearly awesome as you see features on the shows that you have never seen before, blemishes on the actor’s faces, individual strands of hair, subtle makeup differences in shades ETC. The swivel stand is nice and the TV itself is not that heavy. It comes with a micro fiber cleaning cloth. Only time will tell if this model will give us the longevity that we are accustomed to. We are totally pleased with our purchase.
Thanks
GM
5 Stars Totally Impressed
I bought this TV a few months ago now and am totally impressed with it. Thanks first off to Amazon for the cheap deal, NO SHIPPING and NO TAX!!
I am going to try to keep this short….
I shopped around, couldn’t find a cheaper store or website for TV’s.
I read reviews, checked out different sites, researched TV’s and found this one. I am in the military, so I mainly wanted a great picture that didn’t weigh a lot and was slim so I can move it myself and it won’t take up much space just in case I have to put in storage when I deploy.
…seriously consider this TV. It is more expensive than the 650 or 750 series, but wow!! Read up, and do your homework, but if you decide on this one, I know you won’t be disappointed!! 1.9 inches thick BABY!! LMAO!!!
5 Stars BEST SAMSUNG EVER
First off i was worried about all the negative reviews about the IR interference and CEVA issues but pulled the trigger anyway because this tv was 600 dollars cheaper than anywhere else. The tv came and it was perfect no issue whatsoever shipping aswell. Best purchase ever

5 Stars The Difference
So you wanted to know the difference? Here it is. It’s THINNER. Actually the thinnest Samsung has ever made @ 1.9″ Other than that nothing has changed between 750-850.
However the 950 there has been a substantial change. LED SmartLighting as been added to the 950 which according to Samsung it only brightens the areas of the screen that need to be, in short this addition gives the 950 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.
1 Star Buyer beware!
New LN46A850 creates conflict with remote to cable receiver. When TV turned on, remote stops working. No fix to be found.
5 Stars Best 46 in LCD
I just got this TV set up and going last weekend and after tweaking all of the settings, this is truly the best TV I’ve ever owned. I previously had a 30 in tube HDTV. The 850 equals all the best qualities of the CRT and has dozens of tweaks to zero in on the best picture for each type of input.
I’m getting my HD signal over the air with a UHF antenna. I have my basic cable running through the S Video input since I don’t have any HDMI outputs from my cable box. HD is awesome and standard definition is excellent.
What sets this set apart from many others is the USB input. I’ve put my pictures on a thumb drive, plugged it in and wow. My pictures have never looked better and I’ll never look at a 4×6 print again.
I have yet to hook up my PC to the TV through the wiselink, but that’s next where I’ll be able to browse and play all of my movie files. Of course you can put your movies on a thumb drive just get an 8 gig for the movie files.
This TV does it all and with style. The screen is very good at holding down room reflections and I am not bothered by the reflective trim.
This is a great LCD and only a plasma or LED model at twice the price would beat it.
5 Stars How thin is it really, wall mounting
Perhaps most people will use the included stand, and set it on top of a console that is 18″-20″ deep, so the thinness is more wow factor (the 950 LED is actually thicker). But when wall mounting, chosen to balance the height between seated and standing (centerline above floor 55″), thin was an important factor in my install. The side of the TV will be visible in the normal traffic flow through the house, so I wanted to get this mounted as cleanly and closely as possible so it wasn’t going to shout “I have a wall HDTV” the second someone walked in the house. I had some challenges.
There are wall mount brackets that are 1/2″ thick (they don’t provide tilting adjustment). Since the power cord and patch cords project out the back, I tried to accomodate that by using a recessed AV mounting plate. In the end, I was able to get the TV to sit just 1″ from the wall. Routing 2 HMDI, component, SVHS, and audio cords behind the set was also a challenge. For those who are wanting to take this on, get the shortest AV cables you can find, and ones with the least amount of meat near the jack so that the cords bend freely (the more you pay, the more room the cable requires). Position carefully a recessed AV plate (I just couldn’t leave an open hole behind the sets for the cords). Watch the location of your studs, since the mounting plate and the AV panel will, most likely, span several studs. Patch cords with 90 degree cords would have been great, but I couldn’t find them.
The end result is the face of the bezel is a respectable 2.9″ from the wall, about the same depth as a quality picture frame.
4 Stars My Adventure - Samsung LN46A850
I finally purchased the Samsung LN46A850 after a year plus of research and searching. I had narrowed the search at first between a Sony, Sharp, Samsung, Vizio and Panasonic. I decided to go with Samsung because of the structure of the TV, the features offered and the research (it relate that it was a top of the line brand).
For the details on the TV check http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LN46A850S1FXZA or PDF format http://www.samsung.com/us/system/consumer/product/2008/07/22/ln46a850s1fxza/ln46a850_spec.pdf .
I cannot find an official review on this TV yet - CNET & ZDNET have reviewed the 56″ so I guess it could be the same.
There are so many features on this TV; I suggest reading about it and then comparing it if you are not sure. Some features I like are the swivel stand, the headphone, subwoofer/ 10w speakers, the 4hdmi port, slim 1.9″ depth and thin LCD with build-in-tuner, auto motion plus 120hz, ultra clear panel, 4ms response time, many plug in components etc., mpeg & jpeg files access and mp3 player on the TV. I’m also partial to the color around the bezel.
I had two major issues, first the price and then the size. I didn’t want to spend more than $3K and I needed something that could fit on my old stand. At first I was interested in a 40″ which was cheaper and then the 46″ that was featured more in the store.
The next step was deciding between the Samsung 6 and 7 series. They both had features I liked; series 7 has almost the same features as series 8 (I note that series 7 does not have a swivel stand. If you call Samsung to ask - they don’t know). I decided to wait because I just wasn’t ready and the price was not worth the size & features. When series 8 came out I jumped to see it; it had all the features I wanted, updated plus the swivel stand. It was the best choice for me.
I waited until it was the price I wanted - $2299 (on sale). I decided to get it at Circuit City since I was uncomfortable getting my TV sent via “white glove” delivery and it wasn’t a store I could visit if I had a problem.
I visited the Circuit City store next to my house (Brooklyn/junction) but it was a new store and they didn’t have it. The manager and salesman there are not reliable and they tried to pressure me into getting things I didn’t need. Next, I went to the 5th avenue store (NY) but the service was awful or should I say there was no service.
I went to Union Square 14th (NY); the service was about the same. However, I decided to ignore the customer service and get my TV. After haggling with the salesman to make sure I got my TV at the online price, he suggested I get some pricey accessories and hook me into paying the hefty $79.99 delivery charge. When I told him I didn’t need it, he told me it was the only service offered by the store. He tried to complacent me and said he would deduct the $20 from the price of the TV - he did not. However, he did give me a 10% discount on the accessories he advised to buy. Anyway, when my TV was delivered they bought in the 550 and didn’t even realize it; I had to point it out to the guy and he had to run and get me my LN46A850 TV.
Now I have my TV on my old stand; it fits!. It’s beautiful. It’s very thin and slender, with a gorgeous red haze around the border. I taught it would be heavier but it’s not. The border is narrow so the red haze doesn’t show that much. The TV is huge - size is incredible and I can see features on people I didn’t want to see. I love the swivel stand so I can turn my TV to get behind it or to the side panel. It has some games on it but they are not complete. They suggest you go online to get the full game however you have to pay. I didn’t like that because it should have been free - for the price I paid on the TV!
I have an expensive MONSTER cord attached to the cable box - the picture is so detail but makes me crazy - feels like 3d with no glasses. I LOVE IT! I still can’t get internet service on it or watch my DVD - that’s because I have not connected the rest of the cords; will do so soon. You can watch your favorite shows in different modes - cinema, sport, regular etc. There are tons of playable options to get the picture the way you want it. Sound is great! I would definitely recommend this TV to everyone. I’m giving it a 4 1/2 because I’m still playing with the features.
