5 Stars Love it love it love it!!!
The TV ROCKS!!! No more to say here! One of the top ten HDTV’s of 2007 according to cnet and I agree.

A small glitch with the company contracted to deliver it. As other reviewers have stated, be proactive and call the company early and often to make sure no delivery issues exist. That said, once the issue was resolved (a data entry error that started with Amazon actually) the tv was delivered professionally with free white glove delivery. I never thought I would spend so much money on a tv on Amazon but I have to admit, they had the best price and included free white glove delivery so I went for it and haven’t regretted it.

5 Stars Phenomenal TV
I researched TVs for a year. Picked up the 5084 on the 4th of July and it’s a winner. I saw it next to the Panasonic TH-50PZ800U and the Panasonic 50PZ80U. I set all 3 TVs to movie mode and liked the Samsung better. Here is how I arrived at this decision.

1. First I got the plasma vs. lcd choice out of the way by appreciating that plasmas still do better blacks and deeper color. My wife and I watch 90% of time at night. This is where plasmas excel.

2. I narrowed down the plasmas to the pioneer 5080, Panasonic 50pz85u, and 50PZ800U.

At the time, the Samsung 5084 wasn’t even in the running. As I spent time watching the Panasonic 50pz85u I noticed noise in dark scenes even connected with a monster cable and a good line cleaner so I passed. I found that the pioneer even on sale was $600 more than the Samsung. The Panasonic 50PZ800U was $1000 more. Clearly these two TVs are superior with more goodies, but not life changing enough to justify the cost.

3. In the end what pushed me to the Samsung was the fact that it’s a “high end TV” from last year that was $1500.00 less than when it came out. I paid $1570. I would rather have an older high end TV than an newer low or medium end TV. While I’m at it Id rather pay a low end price for a high end TV.

4. This TV is still among the top ten on Cnet almost a year later with the same rating as it’s newer 2008 model: PN50A550

5. At the writing of this review all knows bugs have been worked out. Another reason to wait on an older high end model.

Pluses:

I have had the Samsung for a month now and it has performed flawlessly.

Good Standard Def picture. Excellent high def. Can’t comment on DVD picture because I am running my DVD player through an Onkyo 605 receiver that up converts the picture to 720p and it looks fabulous.

My wife loves the bezel (frame). This is what made the whole thing work for her. Plus setting up the room so that it looks like a display room.

Minuses:

You have to be careful how long you pause a picture as it will retain the image. I created a macro key on my Logitech remote (that a got at Amazon) called safe pause. When I press it, it pauses the picture and turns the TV off. If however you get picture retention, Samsung has excellent tools that act like window washers for your screen.

Some times I might watch TV during the day if I am off and the light coming in can be a drawback in dark scenes. This is easily remedied with $15 window blinds.

I am very happy I bought this TV and have no regrets. Get one before they disappear.

5 Stars Great TV!
I have had the TV for over a month now. It is more than worth the money! The picture is amazing. The sound is fine (I only heard a buzzing sound once the second time I used the tv. Since then I have not heard it).

I would highly recommend this product!

5 Stars SAMSUNG 50in Plasma FPT5084
Bought this TV in 8 months ago (January 2008). Very, very happy with this plasma TV. Excellent picture and easy to use remote control. I haven’t had any problems since purchasing it. The side panel inputs are convenient. The contrast with black and other dark colors is great.

The HD channels are great. However, like other plasma’s, the non-HD channels are average at best.

4 Stars Nice TV/Lousy Samsung Customer Service
I’ve had this TV for almost a year and it’s darned nice! As it should be, for the price. However, the optical connector went out on it. It was covered under warranty. The service guy had to change out the entire motherboard to replace the optical connector. I examined the old motherboard, and the optical connector had broken off–it appears to be a very weak unit; can’t handle any stress. Samsung’s customer service is the worst, however. Wait times are long, and then when you finally get connected to a real person, they go by the script and cannot think for themselves. First thing to do when you call is ask to speak with a supervisor and that will bump you past the robots. However, don’t expect a lot more from the second line. They get to be a bit more rude than the first line, but that’s about it.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Beautiful picture
Beautiful picture. Easy setup. Love having so many inputs. Also have Viera DVD setup. Saved hundreds off retail price.

5 Stars Beautiful Picture
A buddy and I both researched this TV and he bought it about 4 months before I did. WOW. I never thought I could feel pleasure in watching a TV ;)

The blacks and color depth are awesome and there is hardly ever any blur when watching fast action sporting events (others say they don’t see it but I do at times.) For 2K there is nothing better out therre!

5 Stars A Great Choice For My First Plasma TV
After considerable investigation of the TV’s available in the Plasma HDTV market, I chose the “Panasonic TH-50PZ800U” based on a combination of features, performance, and price. An added bonus is that it is projected as possessing a 100,000 hour lifetime–seldom heard of in this market presently. It has 4 HDMI inputs that will allow for future growth. After one month I am delighted with the television and feel comfortable recommending it to anyone in the market.

It is a beautiful television with a very dark screen (when off) surrounded by a black classy, nonintrusive bezel. Mine sits on a swivel stand that comes with it although it could be easily mounted on a rear stand or wall. It has a p.c. input and an SD card slot with Photo Viewer/Gallery Player software. It also has a game mode function that automatically adjusts the image quality appropriate to game needs.

I am not a techie so I will just mention that it 1920 X 1080 resolution with 5120 shades of gradation. It represents a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio which is part of what Panasonic calls its “Real Black” system which seems highly impressive. It has 24P native reproduction which will most be appreciated while watching Blu-Ray movies.

For me, I find the contrast between a program or sports event on regular mode versus the same scenes on HDTV mode to be an incredible difference–a difference that makes the additional cost of a plasma screen to be well worth the cost. There is amazing color reproduction with extremely high contrast ratios that produce brighter” whites” and darker “blacks”.

My Panasonic is slightly recessed where it is mounted so I have no problem with screen reflection of any kind; indeed, I find consistent and distortion free brightness from any viewing angle. Similarly, as promised in Plasma screen televisions, there is very fluid, smooth and graceful movement in any program, sports event, or action sequence.

This Panasonic carries the prestigious THX certification and once you watch an event in that mode you will not want to watch any other mode. The “Panasonic TH-50PZ800U” has four speakers that provide decent quality sound reproduction when you are not running the TV through your sound system or a receiver.

I can heartily recommend the “Panasonic TH-50PZ800U” to anyone seeking value, multiple features, and great performance in the current Plasma HDTV market.

5 Stars Cognitive Dissonance
I researched HDTVs for a couple of months, and decided to pull the trigger on the 50pz800u. I am very pleased with my decision. I think the 800u is the best high-end plasma for the money.

After reading countless CNET reviews, Amazon reviews, and AVSforum comments, I narrowed my decision to the Samsung LN46A650 LCD, Pioneer 5020FD Plasma, and the Panny 800u. After watching a couple of football games at Best Buy, I decided that plasma was the way to go–sports looked incredible.

The Pioneer Kuro line has the best picture quality and black levels, but I feel that they have poor value. In my opinion, the differences in quality are not worth the premium you must pay for the Kuros (especially the Elites).

Having said that, the Panny looks far better at home than it does in any store. This is especially true in the THX mode. The THX mode was a major selling point for me, and it looked mediocre at best inside many brick & mortar stores. I knew that I would never have my HDTV calibrated and the 800u has a very accurate picture right out of the box with the THX mode.

Additional thoughts:

- After you watch the THX mode (especially at night) it is hard to go back to vivid. I never realized just how cartoonish colors were in the vivid setting.

- Viera link is a great feature. To control my surround sound (Panny HTIB) or Blu-ray player, I can conveniently use the TV’s remote–a very underrated feature.

- 24 fps. I was excited about the 24 frames-per-second feature, hoping it would be a more film-like experience. As so many have noted–there is definitely flicker that is clearly visible in bright scenes. Flicker seems the least-noticeable when you are looking directly at the tv from a distance. If this is a major selling point for you–try and find an 800u at a store that is hooked up to a Blu-ray player and watch. I can’t handle it, some can.

- Shipping. Amazon’s shipping (through Pilot) was great. I received the television 5 days before I thought I would, in perfect condition. Pilot called me twice to notify me of the TV’s delivery. Do not let ordering such a valuable product online scare you (its a LOT CHEAPER). This was my first major purchase ($1000+) from an online retailer–and I am extremely pleased.

- Value. As I mentioned before, I wanted a high-end HDTV with a lot of relevant features (the Samsung’s 650 series hooks up to the internet for news on your TV–but who really uses that?) and a great price/value ratio. If money isn’t an option, get an Elite. Otherwise, spend the money you save on surround sound.

I wanted the best HDTV I could possibly buy for under $2000—and I made the right decision going with the 800u.

5 Stars PERFECT
Panasonic TH 58PZ850U - 58″ VIERA plasma TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV

Absoluely perfect! There’s no other way to describe my purchase with Amazon. The price was the most competitive. The ordering process was seamless. The delivery via CEVA was completely professional. The TV arrived in perfect condition and the CEVA team carefully unpacked and setup my TV.

5 Stars Outstanding TV
I wholeheartedly agree with the reviewer who ranked this just below the Kuro in quality. The picture is simply outstanding. Make the adjustments noted below, pop in ‘Sin City’ and prepare to be amazed.

5 Stars The best!
I ordered this direct from Amazon. I make it a point to buy directly from Amazon as they are then responsible for returns etc.. Never had a bad experience with Amazon and this purchase was a great example.

First, the Amazon “white glove” boys were just perfect. They called a week ahead to set up a time, called when they were 20 minutes away from my home, arrived there right at the agreed time, unpacked the unit and put the stand on and placed it on top of the cabinet where it belonged. Then they waited 5 minutes as I hooked it up to make sure it worked. Took away the trash and departed. Couldn’t ask for more.

Setup was extremely easy. I had read some of the other reviews and had the recommended tuning for my TV room. We have windows along one wall and I had worried about reflection . . . shouldn’t have as there wasn’t any. Could be because the light is coming in through trees and is softened already.

The picture just blows you away. I got to watch Oklahoma beat OSU and then watch them win the Big 12 in HD. You could see the sweat on the players faces, the individual strands of grass when they zoomed in, the seams on the ball . . . I could go on and on, but this is the best picture I have seen on any TV ever. I have it hooked up to a Denon 988 and we watch our Netflix selections upscaled to 1080p by the Denon. Really clear and detailed. The clarity and level of detail is far beyond the big LCD’s that we had tried. I can see why Plasma is the way to go for the big screen. It is worth every penny and the whole family agrees that the 50″ would have been too small.

I have no negatives whatsoever.

5 Stars Shhh…don’t wake me, if this is but a dream :-)
After about four weeks of researching, we settled on the

TH-58PZ800U 58″ Panasonic. Reviews here, elsewhere and the

fact that this model was the CNET Editor’s Choice for October

08, finalized our decision. Not to mention, that several

commented it was almost as perfect as the Kuro, which is way

beyond our price range.

We put together a new home theatre system, from the ground up,

with the Panny as the showstopper, a ONKYO TX-SR806 7:1 Channel

receiver (which we also purchased through Amazon/see review) and

Aperion speakers (which will blow your mind, btw). We have HD/DVR

and a PS3 for gaming and Blu-ray. A wonderful combination!

When that last speaker wire was connected, all the HDMI’s were

re-checked for contact, the remotes were loaded with batteries

and the “ON” buttons were pushed, I entered a parallel,

universe—one where I saw and heard spectacular performances

that far exceeded all my expectations. And, everyone we have

introduced our system to has had the same jaw-dropping experience.

Heck, I even like to look at this TV when it isn’t even on. It’s

all black exterior, has an elegance all on its own.

Yes, this has been a magical, dreamlike experience…one I’m

proud to share with those that might be in the market for a

Plasma TV in this price range. It is simply a beautiful TV!

And, if you’re leery about making such a purchase on-line, don’t

be. They’ll handle the details, while you’re tracking and

preparing for delivery, from the comfort of your own home. And,

you’ll be saving a bit of money, too. I’d do it all over again,

in a heartbeat!

5 Stars Awesome Television
This TV replaced a 50″ Panasonic Plasma and has not disappointed one bit. The intense balck levels and color reproduction Panasonic is known for are all there and the THX mode truly provides a pre-calibrated movie viewing experience for a dark room. The Custom settings allow easy switchback for standard TV viewing and lit environments.

The panel itself is sleek and beautiful. The glass is much less refelective than my older model and the uniformity of the picture at even the widest angle is fantastic.

This is truly a high end TV for a mid range price. Buy with confidence

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Did I mention this TV fits most 36″ cabinets?
With its low profile frame its the perfect solution for those that have invested a little too heavily in entertainment centers for their old 36″ direct view TVs. The only downside is that you may have to remove the doors but it will usually fit, and you’ll need the optional stand to make this work.

Like all Panasonic plasmas, this little unit offers an amazing picture and color reproduction with more settings and display options than you could ever use. The TV also has a built in Zoom feature which comes in handy on special occasions. And the “A” specific industrial model was upgraded with 2 HDMI ports but still has an available slot for adding more HDMI, DVI, or other inputs your system may require. It does have built in component video inputs but they are BNC type connectors so you will need 3 adapters for your RCA type cables before connecting.

All in all its a 5 star product from Panasonic. The remote is easy to navigate, the manual is well written and easy to translate, but as you may already know this plasma does not have a built in tuner, so you’ll either need a cable or satellite tuner which is not a problem for most people making this a centerpiece in a home theater setup.

A word of caution though, HDTV is addictive…..just when you get comfortable with your new 42″ Panny you may be struck with a deep regret you didn’t go for the 50″ model. That happened to me twice, and I am now the proud but TV poor owner of a 42″, 50″, and 58″ Panasonic plasma. 5 Pixels

Panasonic TH 42PC77U 42 720p Plasma HDTV with ATSC and Anti Glare

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Wow!
Bought this TV at Costco for $1,149.00 after much researching. Consumer Report ranks this TV pretty high as far as Plasmas go. I am from old school so as excited as I was, when I got home. I unbooxed it and LET IT SIT for about 4 hrs to come to room temperature before trying to operate it. I set up my surround sound system turned on this TV and WOW!

Right out of the box it is incredible!. I love the Anti-Glare, because it is in a room with many windows. One of the notable features is the tuner. I have BASIC cable with 13 channels. I set the TV to tune automatically and blam! All the HD channels came in! WOW again! The first night we watched a movie (for the first time) in HD. Automatic dimming feature is great too…without even realizing it…we shut off some lights and the TV compensated for it. I did my research, especially regarding size. I kinda got sucked into the whole bigger is better and 1080 VS 720. After reading that anything in Plasma bigger than 42″ you should probably get a 1080 and for TVs 42″ and smaller you won’t notice a difference, I have to agree. The 42″ is a perfect size for our living room. I am sure this TV will give us many years of HD viewing pleasure at a great price. I reccomend this TV to anyone researching. Plasma, in my opinion is far superior to LCD both in picture quality and price. Plus Costco has a 90 day return policy and gives a 2 year warranty on all TVS. That sweetened the deal too!

3 Stars Wrong Description!
BIG PRINT across top of item page shows “1080P” - but this is actually only a 720P set: read the detailed description AND / OR see Panasonic’s web site…

Should still be an Excellent set, but smacks of “false advertising”…

5 Stars Happy
This TV has been great the picture quality and its options have been wonderful 42″ is perfect size and HD looks great in the last two months ive bought a Toshiba 37″ and a Samsung 37″ LCD i returned them both to costco because for the same exact frice i bought the Pasnosonic 42″ plasma

4 Stars Good TV; But Not a 1080p
As mentioned above, this is not a 1080p television. However that does not affect the picture quality at all because it is only 42″. CNET states, and I agree, that the difference in resolution between 1080p and 720p (this set) are really only visible with televisions larger than 50″, and even then they are not noticeable to the average viewer.

This is a great set, the anti-glare feature is a great bonus. It is my understanding that it is the same exact thing as the TH 42PX77U, just a different letter for some retailers. Be warned that it doesn’t have Picture-In-Picture like most other TV’s and there are not as many options available to fine-tune the picture.

Regardless, it is a great value TV with a good picture.

5 Stars WOW is right!
[...] TCRAWFORDS post was spot on. Amazing quality all the way around. Now to address the 1080p bit (Wrong Description, Good TV, Not 1080p)…yes while a true 1080p is 1920×1080 pixels, and will no doubt be stunning on anything larger than 42″…this plasma is set to receive that signal and display 1080p/1080i/720p/480p (clearly stated on the Panasonic Website under technical specs). Yes, its display resolution is 720p, but not being a techie, the following test put my 1080p worries to rest….

My real world test: we have a Sony PS3 (configured to display at 1080p), which as you may or may not know features a built-in Blu-Ray player (that will handle Blu-Ray 2.0 spec when it comes out)…all the Blu-Ray titles are simply stunning.
