5 Stars Glad I held out for Black Friday & a Plasma
I like many other first time buyers of a flat panel tv, was thinking of buying something in the 32-37″ size and lowest price. Then I read some reviews & settled on either Samsung, Sony Or Toshiba in this size range because of the reviews.. I checked out the stores on several trips & could not decide, except on staying with the three brands in that size. On Black Friday, I almost decided on a 32″ Toshiba for $449.00, but I waited til Sat. so my sons could go with me. I had discovered that for @ $800.00 I could get a 40″ 1080, or for $900.00 I could get a 42″ plasma 1080. After I showed them my choices, I got a go ahead for the Panasonic plasma. I really like the on-set controls at the bottom in the front under a door like the tv I already am used to. I liked the SD slot, and the many connection options. LCD was brighter on a side by side comparason, but the great color of plasma won out. These are back up to @ $1100.00 & I am so glad I got mine that weekend. My new U-verse is hooked up & I am very happy with this set. One thing I did not know about plasma was that you could not lay it on it’s side to take it home. Luckily , my son had an SUV that would carry it upright. I highly recommend this set.

5 Stars This, is the tv that made me convert from LCD
This is my third HDTV I had in the past year and a half. I bought a Olevia 232v lcd last summer and decided to upgrade the brand and size and got the Samsung a530 40 inch lcd tv. It was great tv but then I saw this go on sale for the same price $900 and since it was 2 inches bigger I figured I would take a look at it….WOW. Once I saw the picture it had I was surprised it was being sold below $1500 and returned my Samsung after owning it for 2 weeks (where it was calibrated).

This tv has amazing black levels (mainly because its a plasma) and the colors and black levels look much better and realistic than the Samsung did. The tv tuner pics up the channels with stunning quality when compared to most tvs. Playing shooting games and Rock Band on this is amazing with no lag whatsoever and watching blu-rays on it makes me know every penny was well spent. If you want the best tv out there when it comes to picture and reliability get this tv! The only reason to not get this tv is if you cant lift 70lbs.

5 Stars Excellent TV With a Stunning Picture
I recently bought the 42PZ80U for $899 and I’ve been using it for about 2 months. I think it’s an excellent buy even around $1000.

Picture:

I was a little skeptical of the virtue of plasma’s over LCD’s because, in those white-washed, warehouse stores, the difference in contrast looks to be negligable. I was wrong. This set produces outstanding blacks. I have another LCD in the house and I didn’t know what I was missing. Contrast ratio on this set is very, very good. Blu-Rays on my PS3 look amazing. I just watched “The Incredible Hulk” and I was SHOCKED at how good it looked. It is unbelievable what this 1080p set can do with the right content. There is far more detail in 1080p than there is in 720p. In the short amount of time I’ve had the Viera, I’ve viewed almost everything I could: sports, news, sit-coms, dramas, HD, SD, Blu-rays, DVD’s, video games, computer games, PC use. It crushes almost everything you throw at it with ease. (I say almost because of problems using it as a computer monitor, see below) Also, the screen itself is glossy, not matte like some LCD’s. Personally, I’ve always prefered the deeper color and slightly more glarey picture of glossy screens over the more-washed out, less reflective matte screens. The Viera has an anti-reflictive coating (aparently) and it does help with glare a lot, at least compared to glossy laptop screens, and TV’s I’ve seen. I have a window behind my seat and I really can’t say I’ve been bothered by reflections at all.

Sound:

First of all, I didn’t expect much of anything from a flat-screen. I have a (rather modest) home theater system and I know better than to expect built-in speakers to compete with a sound system. That said… the speakers are terrific! The sound is full (plenty of bass) and it gets LOUD without distorting. In “Hulk” explosions were booming, ricocheting bullets were crystal clear, and it wasn’t even at half-volume. I won’t be giving up my dedicated surround system for movies and parties and such, but most of the time I’ll be comfortably relying on the Panasonic’s speakers.

Features:

Well, the on screen menu is very good. Not exceptionally pretty or groundbreaking, but it’s better than any of the TV’s I’ve had in the past (except that the useless “Vierra Link” is first up on the menu). The remote, functionally, is not bad, but it is pretty ugly, and a TV at this level should have a universal remote. I would have liked picture-in-picture, but no-one in this class has PIP, so I won’t fault it there. SD card slot is a nice feature, but it doesn’t pan or fade or anything, so I’ll stick to Windows Media Center if I want a slide-show. I also give points for including an input button on the front of the TV with the standard CH, VOL, so you don’t have to find the remote every time you want to switch between cable and Playstation. Also, a front HDMI input is nice but I have major problems with the back inputs (again, see below).

Other:

I bought this TV partially for use as a computer monitor, since I’m paying for a 1920×1080 screen. It doesn’t have a VGA input, which is a bummer for most people who want to use it with their laptop. I don’t mind since my desktop will work with a DVI-HDMI cable. Kinda. First of all, this set isn’t exactly pixel-perfect. I assume this is an issue generic to plasmas of any brand, but small text is slightly blurred and difficult to read. It’s not that big of a deal since color is more accurate than an LCD for programs like Photoshop. The bigger and more unforgivable problem is with the inputs. The second day I had the TV, it wouldn’t turn on and the power LED kept blinking. I thought it was broken. A little internet research told me that the back two HDMI ports don’t work with computers: if you try to power-on the TV while the computer is already on and plugged in, something in the TV keeps it from turning on. You have to a: plug it in the front port (obnoxious and unsightly) or b: buy an HDMI repeater/extender. (This information was gathered from an internet forum). I’m probably going to buy the repeater, as I currently have it plugged in on the front of the TV and I hate it. This is absurd and inexcusable. Just be warned about these issues if you want to use it as a monitor.

Also, plasmas are generally more power hungry than LCD’s. I don’t have a wattage meter or anything but according to tests I’ve read, this set is on par with most 42″ LCD’s and has a very low standby power rating. Excellent work, Panasonic.

I know I went into great detail over the flaws, but overall, I’m extremely happy with my purchase and continually impressed by the picture I get. Excluding those really needing a computer monitor, I would recommend the Panasonic 42PZ80U to anyone.

5 Stars Awesome TV
Great picture. Blacks are black, and colors are deep and rich. The auto view is a great setting that will adjust to the room’s lighting and automatically select the brightness and other picture settings. Loads of inputs, a total of 4 HDMI. Perfect for connecting my cable box, 360, Blu-Ray and still have an extra to spare. The built in game mode and low response time make it a great TV for gaming. No noticeable lag so FPSs play great. The best thing about this TV is the price. I did a lot of research and a lot of people agree this is a great TV at a great price. Competes with Sony and Samsung’s lineup.

If I could find any cons for this set: The back panel is too close to the edge of the TV, not really a problem because it makes for easy access, but it may cause a pain for cable management.

Blu-Ray is still the way to go, but even playing DVDs upconverted to 1080p looks amazing on this set. If you want a quality picture and don’t feel like dropping the cash on Blu-Ray, invest in a nice upscaling player.

4 Stars good value
good quality at a fair price . i bought this one for use in one of my rental units.

2 Stars its not a 1080p
This Tv is not 1080p so don’t fall for it. they call it 1080p because they say the monitor is a 1080p screen but the monitor will not accept any 1080p single so this Tv will only view 1080i. I have attempted to correct this problem with the company but they don’t care. don’t but this TV if your want 1080p for your BlueRay or video game system, you will be very upset that you could have bought a true 1080p.

other then this the TV is fine but it’s not 1080p!

5 Stars Toshiba 42 inch TV
White Glove Delivery-(CEVA) On time and very courteous. TV is outstanding. Good picture with 480 DirectTV and Great with over the air 1080 hd. Picture is customizable to preference. Sound stabilization is as advertised-no glaring commercials.

5 Stars Excellent TV and price
This is my first LCD TV and I’m very happy with it. Spent a lot of time over the last month checking out various 40-47″ LCD TVs and finally decided on the Toshiba REGZA 42RV535U because of its quality and price (total $912). Due to my experience with both Toshiba and Samsung I favored these brands but there’s no shortage of attractive LCDs to choose from many companies. Samsung costs more and offered no competitive model or price to this Toshiba. I found the Toshiba XD-E500 upconversion DVD player online for $76, which produces an excellent picture on the 42RV535U. Add the $13 I spent for 3 HDMI 6′ cables (online too) and I’m watching HDTV for a grand total Of $1001! The non-HD TV channels look good too (I’m on Time Warner cable) and in my small living room the sound (cranked up) has proven to be more than adequate. I have checked up on the Sony HT-CT100 Sound Bar Home Theater and may add it later. I have no Blu-Ray plans for present - will take some convincing and much price dropping for me to participate.

My wife and I physically set up the TV on its stand and placed it in position. If you know what you’re doing, the electronic part of the setup should be brief but I took longer fumbling a bit over the cable box/TV accommodations. But all went well finally.

Let me add perhaps the most important thing. Once set up, I restarted the Marvin Gaye at Montreux DVD that I had been using to hook up the XD-E500 and let it rip. What a reward for all the effort of buying this TV - my TV watching will never be the same.

5 Stars Very satisfied.
My wife and I are very pleased with this t.v. The unit fits beautifully in our family room, the footprint on the same cabinet our old t.v. was on. The sound is probably average judging from what they say about sound on other similar tv’s. I decreased the treble to lessen the “sss” effect in some of the speech.

1 Star blank after a few months
I bought this TV from Sears with extended warranty . I loved it until couple months later, It went blank after I turned the power on . I called Sears and the tech came 5 times to fix and he finally couldn’t fix it . The problem has been going on for two months now and the broken TV is still at my house …

Panasonic used to be a really good branch but not any more . I am very disappointed with the TV, Panasonic 1 year warranty service and specially Sears’s 3 three years warranty service.

Will not recommend to any one .

4 Stars Very nice
It took a long time but I finally made up my mind and bought one. I’m on Comcast with extended basic. The tv tuned in all the local HD feeds and they look great. I particularly like the PBS channel’s HD feed, but all the major network’s pictures are fantastic. The audio from the HD feeds is nice and full. Overall the experience when watching HD feeds is super. The standard channels look ok with the right screen setting, at least no worse than my old tube. The TV is a little slow to change channels when you input the channel directly, but it moves quickly when navigating up or down. The HD channels are all number dash number. For instance, ABC is on channel 7, but the HD feed is 7-1. To tune that station I have to navigate up from channel 7. Not a big deal but I cannot input it directly.

I hooked up a Phillips upconvert DVD player using a three dollar HDMI cable I also found on Amazon and the picture is fantastic. It was definitely worth the 60 bucks I paid at Sam’s Club for it.

So, the picture looks great and the TV sounds good. I have the set in a very bright room and the antiglare does a nice job of eliminating reflections while not degrading the picture. My only regret is not getting the 50″.

5 Stars Got it at Sears because they had a horrible price!
First of all let me say that this is a spectacular tv! I first wanted an lcd at first but when I saw the plasmas, they really caught my eye. After a lot of research I wanted the th-42pz700u but then saw it side by side with the th-42pz77u and was sold. The 77u didn’t have the glare of the 700u thanks to it’s anti-glare and anti-reflective surface. Plus the colors seemed richer in the 77u. So it went on sale at Fry’s for $1199 and Sears had it for $1805. Sears has a price protection guarantee so I got it for $1199 that Fry’s had if for PLUS $51 off of that for a total of $1148. Sears gives you 10% of the difference in the price so the huge price difference worked in my favor! Love it!

2 Stars Great picture, not so great quality
Like a few of the other reviewers, we enjoyed this television for only a few months before it refused to turn on and displayed the dreaded blinking red light. Panasonic is going to send someone to our house in a few days. I wish that I didn’t have to worry about how long this set will last.
