1 Star TOSHIBA: Grench that stole Xmas for my daughter
NOTE: this is a general review of Toshiba’s customer service center. Should you have any concerns about what may happen when or if you tv breaks, this is the chaos and frustration you will find in dealing with them. Please go with a different brand…

We bought a TV/DVD combo from Toshiba as a gift from Santa last year for my 8-year old so that she could watch her Full House and Lizzie McGuire movies on it in her bedroom. Unfortunately, after 4 months, the tv’s picture stopped working. She told me to send it back to Santa, so off it went to our local authorized Toshiba repairman, as you cannot return these items to Amazon after a certain period of time. We were told by Toshiba that the tv was under full warranty for parts and service. The repairman said no. We would have to pay at least $80 in service repairs. Well, it’s been six months and we have yet to see our tv. The part that was supposedly broken was out of stock. Toshiba has sent out part after part after part…spending more in shipping and parts I’m sure than we actually paid for the tv. Now they are shipping out their 4th part…and we still have no tv and it’s November. NOTE: the Toshiba representatives were rude and their supervisor (Dave Thomson) was scripted and condescending. TOSHIBA DOES NOT STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT AND DOES NOT HELP ITS CUSTOMERS.

My daughter got so upset that Santa didn’t return her tv that we had to buy her another tv a few months ago. Then, she overheard one of the numerous heated discussions between my husband and Toshiba. Every time my husband called, we were told the issue would be “escalated”. The representatives are scripted and said whatever they could to passify us. In the end, we were told by Toshiba’s supervisor (Dave Thomson) that this was their final decision…to just continue to keep trying to fix an inferior product with no hope that it may get fixed. By the time we get the tv back, if we get it back, it will no longer be under warranty.

In the end, with no return of her original tv and the numerous phone calls to/from Toshiba, my daughter finally got the clue and realized Santa doesn’t exist. Thanks Toshiba. MAY NO PARENT EVER RELY ON YOUR PRODUCT AGAIN! THE TECHNOLOGY IS LOUSY AND YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AN EMBARRASSMENT! GIVEN HOW TIGHT CONSUMERS’ WALLETS ARE THIS SEASON, I HOPE PEOPLE LOOK PASSED YOUR BRAND AND SELECT A BETTER CHOICE.

FYI…When we purchased the tv, it was not made clear to us that it would be outdated within 14 months with the switch to digital.

Happy Holidays from a very dissatisfied customer.

3 Stars Excellent but……….
We ordered the 19 inch Toshiba TV to replace our older Magnavox 12 inch CRT TV in the kitchen. Other than the following, it was a quantum improvement in technology.

1. The audio was very poor. Although there are adjustments for bass, treble and balance, the sound quality is very disappointing. Very tinny even with bass set on maximum. Needs bigger speakers.

2. The monitor angle adjustment was inoperative. I had to completely disassemble it and loosen the lock screw to move the monitor screen from the shipping position. This may have been a one in a hundred case of improper assembly at the factory, but it should have been picked up on the production line.

Other than the foregoing, we were very pleased with the performance and LCD flat screen vs. CRT picture quality.

5 Stars Review of Toshiba 19″ LCD
We purchased this TV for my father to watch from his bedroom. Excellent color and sound with a small footprint that makes it easy to place on a dresser, etc. It was shipped to his address and it worked fine out of the box. Excellent value!

4 Stars Aspect Ratio
It is not true that all 19″ HDTV’s regardless of brands have 16:10 ratio. Sharp makes 19″ HDTV’s with true 16:9 aspect ratio. But their 19″ TV’s are inadequate in terms of sound volume since it is only rated at 2 watts. Vizio also makes a true 16:9 19″ HDTV, their VA19L, and its sound volume can go very loud because it is rated at 5 watts. You won’t find any other 19″ HDTV rated at such a strong wattage. So the Vizio VA19L has the best of both worlds.

3 Stars Terrible sound!
Got this TV and thought the video features were great…but the sound was awful - very “tinny” sounding speakers. Sounded like a bad Nextel phone! Could not even add external speakers because there is no audio output jack - only optical digital outputs. We bought this to use in our kitchen, and have no room to hook up a surround system. We don’t want that just to watch the news, etc., so the TV went back.

Samsung FPT5094W 50 Inch 1080p Wireless Plasma HDTV

Samsung’s 50″ FP-T5094 offers full HD 1080p resolution. Watch its astonishingly crisp picture from any angle - even in a brightly lit room, thanks to its ultra FilterBright anti-reflection filter. Because the image is transmitted to the screen from its remote hub, you have more options as to where to place this stylish HDTV.

1 Star Don’t buy
I bought this tv 2 weeks ago and have had issues with it since. Though the picture quality was great and the tv was nice looking, I experienced the following problems:

1.You cannot play video games on it, because of the extreme delay between what you see on the tv and the gaming console. The repairman said that if my xbox had hdmi this would be better, but he also said that about componet (which I’d tried) before I showed him that component didn’t solve it either.

2. After watching anything for about 15 minutes, the tv screen freezes and then connects with the wireless station, which takes about a minute and usually happens once every few hours. I should note that I plug my tv into a power strip, which I turn off each night to save energy, so if you leave your tv plugged in this may not be as much of an issue.

3. The delay between the audio and video when plugged into a home theater is huge. The setting on my reciever can delay the audio up to 100ms and even that is not quite enough.

For my use, the technology simply isn’t there yet, and I returned it yesterday. Amazon was very helpful and gracious about the return, however, and I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

4 Stars Has a few cons to go along with the pros.
I just got this TV delivered to me today. A couple of pros: This is the nicest looking flat screen TV I have seen. The picture and sound are both fantastic, and I haven’t even gone HD on it yet. However, within 30 minutes of owning it, I noticed a few problems.

1. That little box in the picture where you plug in all your cables? I didn’t realize that thing is the size of a cable box or DVD player. This is obviously my fault for not realizing the perspective of it in the picture, but I’m sure others will make the same mistake. I thought I’d be able to tuck it away somewhere. No can do. I’ve actually decided to put the TV on top of it, cause it is actually as wide or wider than the stand, contrary to what the picture would have you believe.

2. This TV doesn’t have a game mode because it is wireless. The wireless transmission to the TV causes a slight delay in seeing what you just did on your video game. For example, I have a Wii. After I roll a bowling ball down the lane, it takes about one second for me to see and hear it on the TV. So I need to move my Wii to my old TV, which is disappointing. This brings me to problem 3.

3. You can plug just about anything into the wireless box, including an external hard drive through which you can pull up MP3’s and photos on the TV, which is awesome, but you can’t plug anything into the actual TV except the power cable, so there’s just no way to solve the gaming problem. I bought it without planning to hang it on the wall. Other than the fact that it comes with a stand, it is completely meant to be hung on a wall.

4. You kind of have to mash the buttons on the remote for a while before it does what you wanted. You can’t just tap a button and the channel changes. You have to really get after it. I get the feeling that it’s having to communicate back and forth with the box to get things done. This will probably be solved when I get a comcast box, but I’ll still experience a delay.

Other than those issues, it rocks. But if you’re a gamer, I’d get a non-wireless LCD.

5 Stars Great technology purchase with no regrets
If you are looking for a beautiful picture and sound, flexibility in placement, and WOW factor don’t look past the Samsung FPT5094W.

Purchased this TV at the end of June after having little luck finding much on the web other than the 4 reviews here on Amazon. After I placed my order I did find 5 reviews on Bestbuy for the 58″ version of this TV which caused me to experience buyer’s remorse while waiting for my TV to arrive. I’m happy to report that within an hour of the TV arriving and being setup, all regrets were quickly replaced with joy. The picture on the set is beautiful. I own 3 Panasonic plasmas in the 37″ to 42″ range and the picture is easily equal to if not better. HD programming pops on the Samsung and during a 4th of July party we recieved comments from at least 30 people about how beautiful the picture was.

Now the best part. The wireless capabilities are incredible and allowed us to hang the TV over our fireplace which is on the opposite wall from our outlets. We have our DirecTV HD DVR, OTA HDTV antenna and PS3 connected to the wireless AV unit stored away in a wooden cabinet approximately 17 feet from the TV. Everything works like a charm…even with the doors closed. Being cable free except for the power cord provides the ultimate in flexibility and looks. We have experienced no issues with picture or sound quality with the wireless capabilities. I have played games like MotorStorm and Resistance Fall of Man on the PS3 with output set to 1080P and everything looked and sounded perfect. Personally I think the reviews on BestBuy were written by installers who are scared that this technology will take a bite out of their profits. If I could make one improvement, it would be to allow any input in the picture-in-picture. Currently it is limited to OTA antenna.

If you are looking for a beautiful picture and sound, flexibility in placement, and WOW factor don’t look past the Samsung FPT5094W.

1 Star Problem with the wireless box
I recently returned this tv. The picture is absolutely stunning, but the tv loses signal with the wireless base unit once every hour or so. I had the samsung tech come and work on the base unit. He replaced some part in it, but even that did not solve the problem. A great tv if it works, but unfortunately mine did not.

2 Stars Major probelms with this TV
I see some of you are having the issues I am having. Love the look and idea of this TV. The delay well you can’t get around it. I was told. “It is not a gaming TV.” I was told it was just the burn in problem. But I never new about the delay. I rigged up my home theater and there was a delay. Then I got the manual and yes you have to plug your HDMI cables in and the audio has to come from the transmitter box to your amp. Works fine then.

Now the big problem is that the image breaks up and then goes off and the TV looks for the transmitter again. The AC effects it. The phone effects it. At least that is the problem right now. The LOCAL samsung engineers found that there are 2 capacitors under powered and heat up. These need to be replace from a 10 watt to a 24watt. Well I thought this did it. For about an hour. Same problems. Today it was the wireless phone. Closer I got it basically didn’t work at all. So far it’s a useless TV. We shall see what happens in the next week. But if someone next door turns on a phone and it can screw your TV up that’s a piece of junk that should have never been released. So far the Samsung people say ya so what. We’ll see what we can do if not that’s the way it is. I’m going to start to talk with Best Buy to see if they will give me something else. Yet my whole room is set up for a wireless TV. As in I’d need a 40′ HDMI cable or tear the whole room apart again and through money down the drain. Sucks.
